Day 147: Tenants Under the Roof

Outside their block of flats in Pabianice, Mr Wilczek (A), a keen birdwatcher, stops his neighbour Gerard (B), who sits on the board of the residents' association, to ask about the insulation work planned for June.

How to study this lesson 3 steps
  1. Read the situation under the title. It says who is talking and how they know each other, which decides how politely they speak.
  2. Read the dialogue line by line with its translation, until every line makes sense. Point at (or tap) a Polish word to see what it means.

    Gerard, I hear the insulation work on our block is supposed to start in June. What about the swifts under the roof?

    Jakie jerzyki? Tam s膮 tylko go艂臋bie, na kt贸re skar偶y si臋 p贸艂 klatki.

    What swifts? There are only pigeons up there, and half the stairwell complains about them.

    S膮 te偶 jerzyki, tylko szybko lataj膮. To gatunek chroniony, a w czerwcu maj膮 w gniazdach m艂ode.

    There are swifts too, they just fly fast. They're a protected species, and in June they've got chicks in their nests.

    To co mam zrobi膰? Mamy dofinansowanie oraz termin: koniec wrze艣nia.

    So what am I supposed to do? We've got funding and a deadline: the end of September.

    We can manage both. They'll do the wall on the courtyard side at the end of August, once the swifts have left.

    And what if they're late this year? The builders won't wait for birds.

    Jerzyki si臋 nie sp贸藕niaj膮, panie Gerardzie. S膮 bardziej punktualne ni偶 jakakolwiek ekipa budowlana.

    Swifts are never late, Gerard. They're more punctual than any building crew.
