Day 148: Eight Chairs for the Office
At an office furniture shop in Radomsko, Ariel (A), a young assistant at an accounting firm, asks the shop assistant, Brygida (B), for a discount on eight office chairs.
How to study this lesson 3 steps
- Read the situation under the title. It says who is talking and how they know each other, which decides how politely they speak.
- Read the dialogue line by line with its translation, until every line makes sense. Point at (or tap) a Polish word to see what it means.
- Spend at least 30 minutes listening to native Polish, for example from the Resources page. It doesn't matter if you don't understand it yet.
Dialogue
Audio recordings are on the way. For now, each lesson is the dialogue with its English translation.

A
Dzień dobry, biorę osiem takich krzeseł do biura. Szefowa powiedziała, żebym nie wracał bez rabatu.
Hello, I'll take eight of these chairs for the office. My boss told me not to come back without a discount.
-
B
Przy ośmiu sztukach mogę dać pięć procent. Więcej bez zgody kierownika nie mogę.
For eight, I can give you five per cent. I can't go any higher without the manager's approval.
-
A
Tylko pięć? Przez telefon powiedziano mi, że przy większych zamówieniach rabat jest wyższy.
Only five? On the phone I was told the discount is bigger on larger orders.
-
B
Proszę pana, osiem sztuk to jeszcze nie jest duże zamówienie. Na jaką firmę mam wystawić fakturę?
Well, sir, eight chairs is hardly a large order. Which company should I make the invoice out to?
-
A
Na biuro rachunkowe „Bilans” z ulicy Kościuszki. NIP mam w telefonie.
The Bilans accounting office on Kościuszki Street. I've got the tax number on my phone.
-
B
Nie trzeba, mamy państwa w systemie. Rok temu wynegocjowano dla firmy stały rabat, dwadzieścia procent.
No need, you're already in our system. A standing discount was negotiated for your firm a year ago: twenty per cent.
-
A
Dwadzieścia? To szefowej powiem, że negocjacje były wyjątkowo trudne.
Twenty? Then I'll tell my boss the negotiations were exceptionally tough.
