Day 174: Chemistry After Ten Years

At a bar by the marina in Giżycko, a young woman who works at a bank (A) tells two old school friends (B and C) about her plans for May.

How to study this lesson 3 steps
  1. Read the situation under the title. It says who is talking and how they know each other, which decides how politely they speak.
  2. Read the dialogue line by line with its translation, until every line makes sense. Point at (or tap) a Polish word to see what it means.

    Listen, in May I'm sitting the matura again, in advanced biology and chemistry this time.

    Po dziesięciu latach? Po co ci to, skoro masz dyplom i stabilną posadę w banku?

    After ten years? What do you need that for, when you've got a degree and a steady job at a bank?

    Bo chcę się dostać na lekarski, a tam liczą się głównie te dwa przedmioty.

    Because I want to get into medicine, and those are the two subjects that count most there.

    Ty i medycyna? Przecież w gimnazjum zemdlałaś na zwykłym szczepieniu.

    You and medicine? You fainted at a routine jab back in lower secondary school.

    Tylko nie rzucaj od razu pracy. Sześć lat studiów, staż, specjalizacja: skończysz, jak będziesz miała czterdzieści lat.

    Just don't quit your job straight away. Six years of study, an internship, a specialisation: you'll be forty by the time you finish.

    Czterdzieści lat i tak skończę. Pytanie tylko, czy jako lekarka, czy jako pani z banku.

    I'll turn forty anyway. The only question is whether I'll be a doctor or the lady from the bank.

    Dobra, przekonałaś mnie. Tylko w razie czego nie rób mi zastrzyków, dobrze?

    All right, you've convinced me. Just don't be the one giving me injections if it ever comes to that, OK?
