Day 178: A Notary for a Rented Flat
In the kitchen of an office in Oleśnica, a young man (A) asks a colleague (B) about the lease on a flat he wants to rent.
How to study this lesson 3 steps
- Read the situation under the title. It says who is talking and how they know each other, which decides how politely they speak.
- Read the dialogue line by line with its translation, until every line makes sense. Point at (or tap) a Polish word to see what it means.
- Spend at least 30 minutes listening to native Polish, for example from the Resources page. It doesn't matter if you don't understand it yet.
Dialogue
Audio recordings are on the way. For now, each lesson is the dialogue with its English translation.

Znalazłem umeblowane mieszkanie blisko biura, ale właściciel chce najmu okazjonalnego. Wiesz, o co chodzi?
I've found a furnished flat near the office, but the landlord wants an 'occasional lease'. Do you know what that is?
-
B
Wiem, sam mam taką umowę. U notariusza podpisujesz, że w razie czego wyprowadzisz się bez procesu.
I do, I've got that kind of contract myself. You sign a statement at a notary's that, if it comes to it, you'll move out without a court case.

To jeszcze przeżyję. Gorzej, że potrzebuję też zgody kogoś, kto mnie wtedy u siebie przyjmie.
I can live with that. The worse part is I also need consent from someone who'll take me in if that happens.
-
B
Każdy prosi o to rodziców. Tyle że właściciele zwykle chcą podpisu poświadczonego notarialnie.
Everyone asks their parents. The only thing is, landlords usually want the signature certified by a notary.

A
Mama podpisała od ręki, chociaż zwykle wszystko czyta trzy razy. Aż mnie to zaniepokoiło.
Mum signed on the spot, even though she normally reads everything three times. It actually worried me.
-
B
Czemu? Pewnie po prostu chce ci pomóc.
Why? She probably just wants to help.

A
Też tak myślałem. A potem zobaczyłem swój stary pokój: posprzątany, łóżko pościelone, na biurku świeże kwiaty.
That's what I thought. And then I saw my old room: tidied, bed made, fresh flowers on the desk.
