Day 35: The Miners' Band at Five

On the evening of 3 December, on an old miners' estate in Bytom, Henryk (A), a retired miner, tells his grandson Kacper (B), who is staying with him, what will happen in the morning.

How to study this lesson 3 steps
  1. Read the situation under the title. It says who is talking and how they know each other, which decides how politely they speak.
  2. Read the dialogue line by line with its translation, until every line makes sense. Point at (or tap) a Polish word to see what it means.
  3. Spend at least 30 minutes listening to native Polish, for example from the Resources page. It doesn't matter if you don't understand it yet.

    Jutro Barbórka. O piątej rano orkiestra górnicza przejdzie przez całe śpiące osiedle.

    Tomorrow's St Barbara's Day. At five in the morning the miners' band will march through the whole sleeping estate.

    O piÄ…tej? I sÄ…siedzi nie dzwoniÄ… na policjÄ™?

    At five? And the neighbours don't call the police?

    Tu mieszkają sami górnicy. Przy każdej bramie muzycy są częstowani kołoczem.

    It's all miners living here. At every front door the musicians are treated to kołocz cake.

    Ale ja nie jestem górnikiem, dziadku. Chcę się wyspać.

    But I'm not a miner, Grandad. I want a lie-in.

  5. A

    Nie wyśpisz się. Pierwszy marsz zawsze gramy pod moim oknem.

    You won't get one. We always play the first march under my window.

  6. B

    To dlatego od tygodnia w piwnicy coś wyje? Myślałem, że to alarm.

    So that's why something's been wailing in the cellar all week? I thought it was an alarm.
