Day 46: Goodbye to the Zorza Cinema

In the car on the way to school in Radom, Igor (A), a secondary school pupil, reads a piece of local news off his phone to his father, Rafał (B), who is driving.

How to study this lesson 3 steps
  1. Read the situation under the title. It says who is talking and how they know each other, which decides how politely they speak.
  2. Read the dialogue line by line with its translation, until every line makes sense. Point at (or tap) a Polish word to see what it means.
  3. Spend at least 30 minutes listening to native Polish, for example from the Resources page. It doesn't matter if you don't understand it yet.

    Tato, posłuchaj: kino Zorza zostanie zamknięte, a w jego miejscu powstanie parking.

    Dad, listen to this: the Zorza cinema's going to be closed, and they're putting a car park in its place.

    Co? Przecież tam byłem z mamą na pierwszej randce, na „Titanicu”.

    What? But that's where your mum and I had our first date. We saw Titanic.

    Nieźle. Nawet nie wiedziałem, że to kino jeszcze działa.

    Nice one. I didn't even know that cinema was still open.

    Działa, ale ledwo przędzie. Rok temu sala została wyremontowana za pieniądze ze zbiórki.

    It is, but it's barely scraping by. A year ago the auditorium was done up with money from a local fundraiser.

    Ty się wzruszyłeś? To chodźmy tam w sobotę, zanim je zamkną.

    Are you getting emotional? Then let's go on Saturday, before they close it.

    Zgoda, ale kupię trzy bilety. Mama też powinna się pożegnać z Zorzą.

    Deal, but I'll get three tickets. Your mum should say goodbye to the Zorza too.

    Tylko nie całujcie się przy mnie, dobra?

    Just don't kiss in front of me, OK?
