Day 45: Kurczę in Reykjavík

At a café in Reykjavík, Marta (A), a young Pole looking for work in Iceland, is paying for her coffee when the barista, Karolina (B), mutters something under her breath.

How to study this lesson 3 steps
  1. Read the situation under the title. It says who is talking and how they know each other, which decides how politely they speak.
  2. Read the dialogue line by line with its translation, until every line makes sense. Point at (or tap) a Polish word to see what it means.
  3. Spend at least 30 minutes listening to native Polish, for example from the Resources page. It doesn't matter if you don't understand it yet.

    Niestety tak, oparzyłam się mlekiem. Pani też z Polski?

    I'm afraid so, I burnt myself on the milk. Are you from Poland too?

    Z Lublina. Szukam tu pracy, więc zaczepiam każdą osobę mówiącą po polsku.

    From Lublin. I'm looking for work here, so I'm stopping anyone who speaks Polish.

    To nie będzie trudne. Im dłużej tu jestem, tym częściej słyszę polski.

    That won't be hard. The longer I'm here, the more often I hear Polish.

    A jak tutejsze zarobki? Opłaca się zostać na dłużej?

    And what's the pay like here? Is it worth staying on for longer?

  6. B

    Chętnie opowiem po pracy. Za panią czeka kolejka Islandczyków, którym kończy się cierpliwość.

    I'll gladly tell you after work. There's a queue of Icelanders behind you who are running out of patience.
