Day 49: Mum Rang the Professor

At the University of Opole, Patryk (A), a second-year student, knocks on the door of Professor Urszula Wr贸blewska (B), who has just given him a four in her exam (five is the top mark).

How to study this lesson 3 steps
  1. Read the situation under the title. It says who is talking and how they know each other, which decides how politely they speak.
  2. Read the dialogue line by line with its translation, until every line makes sense. Point at (or tap) a Polish word to see what it means.
  3. Spend at least 30 minutes listening to native Polish, for example from the Resources page. It doesn't matter if you don't understand it yet.

    Excuse me, Professor. I hear my mum rang you yesterday?

    Dzwoni艂a. Mia艂a pretensje, 偶e z egzaminu dosta艂 pan tylko czw贸rk臋.

    She did. She complained that you only got a four in the exam.

    Rodzice licz膮 na stypendium rektora. Ci膮gle stawiaj膮 mi za wz贸r kuzyna studiuj膮cego medycyn臋.

    My parents are counting on the rector's scholarship. They keep holding up my cousin, the medical student, as an example.

    Rozumiem t臋 presj臋, ale o ocenach nie rozmawia si臋 z rodzicami doros艂ych student贸w.

    I understand the pressure, but grades aren't discussed with the parents of adult students.

    Dzi臋kuj臋. A nie wspomnia艂a pani, 偶e czasem przysypiam na wyk艂adach?

    Thank you. And you didn't mention that I sometimes nod off in lectures?

    Nie, bo nie wiedzia艂am. Za to teraz ju偶 rozumiem t臋 czw贸rk臋.

    No, because I didn't know. But now that four makes sense.
