Day 51: Nine Złoty in Crushed Bottles

In their flat in Siedlce, Monika (A) asks her husband Darek (B) about the plastic bottles their daughter Zuzia (C) has been saving to return for the 50-grosz deposit.

How to study this lesson 3 steps
  1. Read the situation under the title. It says who is talking and how they know each other, which decides how politely they speak.
  2. Read the dialogue line by line with its translation, until every line makes sense. Point at (or tap) a Polish word to see what it means.

    Darek, czemu butelki Zuzi są zgniecione? Jutro miała je oddać do automatu.

    Darek, why are Zuzia's bottles all crushed? She was going to take them to the machine tomorrow.

  2. B

    Bo zajmowały pół balkonu. Kiedyś butelki się po prostu wyrzucało.

    Because they were taking up half the balcony. In the old days you just threw bottles away.

  3. C

    Tato, automat nie bierze zgniecionych butelek! Tam było dziewięć złotych.

    Dad, the machine doesn't take crushed bottles! There was nine złoty in there.

  4. A

    Butelki z kaucją powinno się oddawać całe. Mówiłam ci to sto razy.

    Deposit bottles are supposed to go back in one piece. I've told you a hundred times.

  5. B

    Dobra, przyznaję się do winy. Zuziu, oddam ci każdą złotówkę z własnej kieszeni.

    OK, guilty as charged. Zuzia, I'll pay you back every złoty out of my own pocket.

  6. C

    Nie dziewięć, tylko dziesięć, za karę! I nie dotykaj więcej mojego worka!

    Not nine, ten, as a penalty! And don't ever touch my bag again!
