Day 52: Two Sledges Against Spring

In a primary school classroom in Sandomierz, the day before the first day of spring, Marysia (A), a pupil, stays behind to ask her teacher, Mrs Wójcik (B), about the straw Marzanna doll the class has made.

How to study this lesson 3 steps
  1. Read the situation under the title. It says who is talking and how they know each other, which decides how politely they speak.
  2. Read the dialogue line by line with its translation, until every line makes sense. Point at (or tap) a Polish word to see what it means.
  3. Spend at least 30 minutes listening to native Polish, for example from the Resources page. It doesn't matter if you don't understand it yet.

    Proszę pani, a czy my naprawdę musimy jutro wrzucić naszą Marzannę do rzeki?

    Miss, do we really have to throw our Marzanna into the river tomorrow?

  2. B

    Taka jest tradycja. Marzanna zabiera ze sobÄ… zimÄ™ oraz wszystkie choroby.

    That's the tradition. Marzanna takes winter away with her, and all illnesses too.

    A gdybyśmy ją schowali do szafy, to zima by została?

    And if we hid her in the cupboard, would winter stay?

  4. B

    Dawniej tak wierzono. Ale czemu tak ci zależy na zimie?

    That's what people used to believe. But why do you care so much about winter?

    Bo pod choinkę dostałam sanki, a tu pech: śnieg leżał tylko dwa dni.

    Because I got a sledge for Christmas, and then, just my luck, the snow only lasted two days.

  6. B

    Rozumiem, ale zimę należy pożegnać. Poza tym cała klasa czeka na wiosnę.

    I understand, but we have to say goodbye to winter. Besides, the whole class is waiting for spring.

    Nie cała. Staś też dostał sanki i mamy już plan.

    Not the whole class. StaÅ› got a sledge too, and we've already got a plan.
