Day 54: A Nikifor on Cardboard

In a small antique shop in Krynica-Zdrój, Filip (A), a young man on holiday, asks the owner, Mr Wiesław (B), about a little painting on cardboard.

How to study this lesson 3 steps
  1. Read the situation under the title. It says who is talking and how they know each other, which decides how politely they speak.
  2. Read the dialogue line by line with its translation, until every line makes sense. Point at (or tap) a Polish word to see what it means.
  3. Spend at least 30 minutes listening to native Polish, for example from the Resources page. It doesn't matter if you don't understand it yet.

    Przepraszam, skąd pan ma ten obrazek na kartonie podpisany „Nikifor”?

    Excuse me, where did you get this little painting on cardboard signed "Nikifor"?

    Od znajomego. Gdyby to był oryginał, nie wisiałby tutaj za trzysta złotych.

    From a friend. If it were an original, it wouldn't be hanging here for three hundred złoty.

    Wiem, bo sam go namalowałem na studiach, siedząc przed Muzeum Nikifora.

    I know, because I painted it myself as a student, sitting outside the Nikifor Museum.

    Wątpię. Co drugi turysta z plecakiem udaje tu malarza.

    I doubt it. Every other tourist with a backpack round here plays at being a painter.

    Proszę odwrócić. Z tyłu jest moje imię i data, napisane ołówkiem.

    Turn it over. My name and the date are on the back, written in pencil.

    Rzeczywiście, „Filip, 2019”. To może namaluje pan więcej, skoro turyści się o nie biją?

    So it is: "Filip, 2019". Then how about painting some more, seeing as tourists fight over them?

    Chętnie, ale gdybym podpisał je swoim nazwiskiem, nikt by ich nie kupił.

    Gladly, but if I signed them with my own name, nobody would buy them.
