Day 55: A Pensioner Sits the Matura

On the stairs of their block of flats in Suwałki, Mr Kazimierz (A), a retired railwayman carrying a school backpack, bumps into his neighbour Sylwia (B).

How to study this lesson 3 steps
  1. Read the situation under the title. It says who is talking and how they know each other, which decides how politely they speak.
  2. Read the dialogue line by line with its translation, until every line makes sense. Point at (or tap) a Polish word to see what it means.
  3. Spend at least 30 minutes listening to native Polish, for example from the Resources page. It doesn't matter if you don't understand it yet.

    Sylwia, I go to a secondary school for adults. I'm sitting my matura in May.

    Pan? A po co panu matura na emeryturze?

    You? And what do you need a matura for when you're retired?

    Kilkadziesiąt lat temu rzuciłem szkołę, a przez brak matury nigdy nie awansowałem.

    Decades ago I dropped out of school, and without a matura I never got promoted.

    Jestem pełna podziwu. Nie jest panu dziwnie w klasie z samą młodzieżą?

    I really admire you. Don't you feel odd in a class of nothing but young people?

    Gdzie tam. Jest nas kilkunastu, w tym kilku emerytów takich jak ja.

    Not at all. There are a dozen or so of us, including a few pensioners like me.

    To chyba się zapiszę. Też nie mam matury, tylko wstydziłam się przyznać.

    Then I think I'll sign up. I haven't got a matura either; I was just too embarrassed to admit it.
