Day 56: Too Quick a Yes

In a pub in Bielsko-Biała, Maciek (A) tells his friend Martyna (B) how his job interview at a software company went.

How to study this lesson 3 steps
  1. Read the situation under the title. It says who is talking and how they know each other, which decides how politely they speak.
  2. Read the dialogue line by line with its translation, until every line makes sense. Point at (or tap) a Polish word to see what it means.
  3. Spend at least 30 minutes listening to native Polish, for example from the Resources page. It doesn't matter if you don't understand it yet.

    Nareszcie mam pracę! Zgodzili się na moje warunki w pięć minut.

    I've finally got a job! They agreed to my terms in five minutes.

    Nieźle! A ile powiedziałeś, kiedy zapytali o oczekiwania finansowe?

    Not bad! So how much did you say when they asked about your salary expectations?

    Siedem tysięcy brutto. Pani z kadr od razu podała mi rękę.

    Seven thousand gross. The HR lady shook my hand straight away.

    Jako rekruterka ci powiem: im szybciej się zgadzamy, tym bardziej kandydat zaniżył stawkę.

    Speaking as a recruiter: the quicker we agree, the more the candidate has undersold himself.

    Serio? To może zadzwonię i powiem, że pomyliłem się o dwa tysiące?

    Seriously? So maybe I should ring them and say I got it wrong by two thousand?

  6. B

    Nie dzwoń, wyjdziesz na amatora. I nie pytaj nowych kolegów, ile zarabiają.

    Don't ring, you'll look like an amateur. And don't ask your new colleagues how much they earn.
