Day 96: Promoted by Gran

In the sales office of a furniture factory in Swarzędz, Fabian (A), a junior salesman who joined a year ago, comes to his manager, Mr Jerzy Kowalczyk (B), with a request.

How to study this lesson 3 steps
  1. Read the situation under the title. It says who is talking and how they know each other, which decides how politely they speak.
  2. Read the dialogue line by line with its translation, until every line makes sense. Point at (or tap) a Polish word to see what it means.
  3. Spend at least 30 minutes listening to native Polish, for example from the Resources page. It doesn't matter if you don't understand it yet.

    Panie Jerzy, mam nietypową prośbę. Czy mógłbym dostać nowe wizytówki?

    Jerzy, I have an unusual request. Could I have some new business cards?

    Nowe? Przecież ze starych nie rozdał pan nawet dziesięciu.

    New ones? You haven't even given out ten of the old ones.

    Chodzi o stanowisko. Babcia pochwaliła się na prawo i lewo, że jestem kierownikiem.

    It's about the job title. Gran has boasted to all and sundry that I'm a manager.

    Rozumiem babcię, chociaż do kierownika brakuje panu jeszcze paru lat i jednego zespołu.

    I can understand your gran, although you're still a few years and one team short of being a manager.

    Wiem, ale w sobotę babcia ma imieniny, zjadą się krewni i każdy zapyta o awans.

    I know, but Gran's name day is on Saturday, all the relatives will be there, and every one of them will ask about a promotion.

    Niech pan się nie przejmuje. Moja mama do dziś mówi sąsiadom, że jestem prezesem.

    Don't let it get to you. To this day my mum tells the neighbours I'm the CEO.
