Day 1: The Skatepark Letter

In the corridor of a primary school in Białystok, Antek (A) runs up to his classmate Hania (B) with the city's reply about the skatepark their class proposed.

How to study this lesson 3 steps
  1. Read the situation under the title. It says who is talking and how they know each other, which decides how politely they speak.
  2. Read the dialogue line by line with its translation, until every line makes sense. Point at (or tap) a Polish word to see what it means.
  3. Spend at least 30 minutes listening to native Polish, for example from the Resources page. It doesn't matter if you don't understand it yet.

    Haniu, przyszła odpowiedź z urzędu w sprawie skateparku! Przeczytaj, bo ja nic nie rozumiem.

    Hania, the council's replied about the skatepark! You read it, I don't understand a thing.

    „Rozpatrzywszy wniosek uczniów klasy 5b, komisja uznała projekt za zgodny z miejscowym planem zagospodarowania przestrzennego.”

    "Having considered the application from the pupils of class 5b, the committee found the project consistent with the local zoning plan."

    Zgodny z planem? Czyli będzie czy nie?

    Consistent with the plan? So is it happening or not?

  4. B

    Chyba będzie, chociaż czekaj, tu jest jakieś „jednak”. „Komisja, uwzględniwszy jednak zastrzeżenia okolicznych mieszkańców, postanowiła zlokalizować skatepark przy ulicy Polnej.”

    I think so, though wait, there's a "however" here. "The committee, however, having taken into account the objections of local residents, has decided to locate the skatepark on Polna Street."

    Przy Polnej? Tam są tylko garaże i jakieś krzaki!

    On Polna? There's nothing there but garages and some bushes!

    Mama mówiła, że sąsiedzi z bloku przy parku zbierali podpisy, bo boją się hałasu.

    Mum said the neighbours in the block by the park were collecting signatures because they're worried about the noise.

    Zaraz, Polna jest przecież koło mojego bloku. To w sumie wygraliśmy!

    Hang on, Polna's right by my block. So actually, we've won!
