Day 2: Twenty Voices from London

In the discussion after his talk at a linguistics conference in 艁贸d藕, doctoral student Marta (A) questions Pawe艂 (B), a young researcher studying the Polish spoken in London.

How to study this lesson 3 steps
  1. Read the situation under the title. It says who is talking and how they know each other, which decides how politely they speak.
  2. Read the dialogue line by line with its translation, until every line makes sense. Point at (or tap) a Polish word to see what it means.
  3. Spend at least 30 minutes listening to native Polish, for example from the Resources page. It doesn't matter if you don't understand it yet.

    Thank you for the talk. I do have one doubt, though: are twenty interviewees from London really a large enough sample?

    S艂uszna uwaga. Dlatego, zanim zacz膮艂em wywiady, przejrza艂em tysi膮ce wpis贸w na forach emigracyjnych.

    A fair point. That's why, before I started the interviews, I went through thousands of posts on emigrant forums.

    Tylko 偶e na forach ludzie 艣wiadomie kreuj膮 sw贸j wizerunek. To nie jest mowa spontaniczna.

    The thing is, on forums people consciously craft an image of themselves. That isn't spontaneous speech.

    I agree, which is why I treat the forums only as background, not as evidence.

    Rozumiem. A czy zamierza pan poszerzy膰 badania o inne skupiska Polonii?

    I see. And are you planning to extend the research to other Polish communities abroad?

    Chcia艂bym uwzgl臋dni膰 Dublin i Oslo, ale to zale偶y od grantu, o kt贸ry si臋 ubiegam.

    I'd like to include Dublin and Oslo, but that depends on the grant I'm applying for.

    Trzymam kciuki. Sama z艂o偶y艂am w tym roku trzy wnioski i wiem, ile to nerw贸w kosztuje.

    Fingers crossed. I've put in three applications myself this year, so I know how nerve-racking it is.
