Day 114: Herbert Z. Wants Full Credit
In the office of a local weekly in Kętrzyn, junior reporter Remigiusz (A) hands his editor-in-chief, Anatol Rataj (B), his story about Herbert Zasada, a muralist charged with criminal damage for painting a mural on the town's old water tower one night.
How to study this lesson 3 steps
- Read the situation under the title. It says who is talking and how they know each other, which decides how politely they speak.
- Read the dialogue line by line with its translation, until every line makes sense. Point at (or tap) a Polish word to see what it means.
- Spend at least 30 minutes listening to native Polish, for example from the Resources page. It doesn't matter if you don't understand it yet.

The item for the police news column is ready. I've only used the initial of his surname, and I've blurred his face.

Słusznie, tak się pisze o podejrzanych. Tyle że dzwonił sam artysta: żąda, żebyśmy podali pełne nazwisko i pokazali twarz.
Quite right, that's how you write about suspects. Only the artist himself rang: he's demanding that we print his full name and show his face.

Podejrzany chce mieć nazwisko w gazecie? Przecież prawo prasowe wprost zabrania publikowania danych i wizerunku podejrzanych.
A suspect wants his name in the paper? But the press law explicitly bans publishing suspects' personal details and images.

Zabrania, chyba że zainteresowany wyrazi zgodę. A pan Zasada przysłał ją podpisaną, razem z linkiem do portfolia.
It does, unless the person concerned gives his consent. And Mr Zasada has sent it in, signed, along with a link to his portfolio.

So we're giving him a free promotional feature? On his way out of questioning, he was handing out business cards to the police officers.

The law allows it, Remigiusz, but whether one should make use of that is a question of ethics.

They say any mention is good publicity. So how about his full name, but just the mural in the photo?
