Day 115: Liver Is on Its Way

At a health centre in Sieradz, Wanessa (A) comes into the surgery of her GP, Dr Sowiński (B), not with symptoms but with a complaint.

How to study this lesson 3 steps
  1. Read the situation under the title. It says who is talking and how they know each other, which decides how politely they speak.
  2. Read the dialogue line by line with its translation, until every line makes sense. Point at (or tap) a Polish word to see what it means.

    Panie doktorze, chciałabym złożyć skargę. Rejestracja przekazała mamie moje wyniki wbrew mojej woli.

    Doctor, I'd like to make a complaint. Reception gave my mum my test results against my wishes.

    To poważny zarzut, pani Wanesso, bo obowiązuje nas tajemnica lekarska. Co dokładnie przekazano pani mamie?

    That's a serious accusation, Wanessa, because we're bound by medical confidentiality. What exactly was your mum told?

    Wszystko, łącznie z niedoborem żelaza. Od rana dzwoni, że przywiezie mi wątróbkę i sok z buraków.

    Everything, iron deficiency included. She's been ringing since this morning to say she's bringing me liver and beetroot juice.

    Zanim przejdziemy do skargi, zajrzę do pani dokumentacji. O ile pamiętam, każdy pacjent podpisuje u nas upoważnienia.

    Before we get to the complaint, let me look at your records. As far as I remember, every patient here signs authorisation forms.

    Nikogo nie upoważniłam. Jestem dorosła, a ponadto o zdrowiu rozmawiam z mamą tylko w ostateczności.

    I haven't authorised anyone. I'm an adult, and what's more, I only talk to my mum about my health as a last resort.

    Tu jest pani podpis sprzed sześciu lat: upoważnienie dla mamy, zarówno do informacji, jak i do dokumentacji.

    Here's your signature from six years ago: an authorisation for your mum, covering both information and your records.

    Faktycznie, po osiemnastce mama przyszła tu ze mną, jak gdyby to był pierwszy dzień szkoły. Mogę to odwołać?

    Oh, right, after I turned eighteen Mum came here with me, as if it was my first day at school. Can I withdraw it?

    W każdej chwili, wystarczy podpis. Niestety w przypadku wątróbki prawo pacjenta do odmowy nie obowiązuje.

    Any time, all it takes is a signature. Unfortunately, where liver is concerned, the patient's right to refuse doesn't apply.
