Day 117: The Only Candidate in Europe

In the office they share at the University of Łódź, young hydrologists Eliasz (A) and Ambroży (B) talk about a job advertisement their department has just published.

How to study this lesson 3 steps
  1. Read the situation under the title. It says who is talking and how they know each other, which decides how politely they speak.
  2. Read the dialogue line by line with its translation, until every line makes sense. Point at (or tap) a Polish word to see what it means.
  3. Spend at least 30 minutes listening to native Polish, for example from the Resources page. It doesn't matter if you don't understand it yet.

    Have you seen the ad for the assistant professor post? It went up yesterday in the university's Public Information Bulletin and on the EURAXESS portal.

    Jeszcze nie. Pewnie standard: doktorat, dorobek i gotowość do prowadzenia zajęć po angielsku?

    Not yet. The usual, I suppose: a PhD, publications and being ready to teach in English?

    Doktorat z hydrologii, publikacje o Bzurze, patent sternika motorowodnego i certyfikat z węgierskiego. Znasz kogoś takiego?

    A PhD in hydrology, publications on the Bzura, a motorboat skipper's licence and a certificate in Hungarian. Know anyone like that?

    No, siebie. Tylko nie mam pojęcia, skąd szef wie, że w wakacje zrobiłem patent.

    Well, me. Only I've no idea how the boss knows I got my skipper's licence over the summer.

    Z Instagrama: cały lipiec pływałeś po Zalewie Sulejowskim. Gratuluję, jesteś jedynym kandydatem w całej Unii.

    From Instagram: you spent the whole of July out on the Sulejów Reservoir. Congratulations, you're the only candidate in the entire EU.

    Przecież konkurs ma być otwarty i przejrzysty, a to ogłoszenie wygląda, jak gdyby zostało napisane pode mnie.

    But the competition is supposed to be open and transparent, and this ad looks as if it had been written for me.

    Bo zostało. Ale jak pójdziesz do szefa, żeby złagodził wymagania, to uczciwie uprzedzam: ja też złożę papiery.

    Because it was. But if you go to the boss to get him to relax the requirements, I'm warning you, in all fairness: I'll apply too.

    Wolę przegrać z tobą, niż wygrać walkowerem. Tylko węgierski zostaje, bo projekt z Segedynem naprawdę istnieje.

    I'd rather lose to you than win by default. The Hungarian stays, though: the project with Szeged really does exist.
