Day 118: Against It, in Principle

On a tram in D膮browa G贸rnicza one Sunday, an elderly man (A) turns to the young woman sitting next to him (B), a student in a supermarket uniform.

How to study this lesson 3 steps
  1. Read the situation under the title. It says who is talking and how they know each other, which decides how politely they speak.
  2. Read the dialogue line by line with its translation, until every line makes sense. Point at (or tap) a Polish word to see what it means.
  3. Spend at least 30 minutes listening to native Polish, for example from the Resources page. It doesn't matter if you don't understand it yet.

    Pani w niedziel臋 do pracy? My艣la艂em, 偶e w niedziele ju偶 si臋 u nas nie handluje.

    Off to work on a Sunday, miss? I thought there was no trading on Sundays here any more.

    Dzi艣 akurat niedziela handlowa. Ja natomiast ch臋tnie pracowa艂abym w ka偶d膮, bo w tygodniu mam zaj臋cia.

    It just happens to be a trading Sunday today. Personally, I'd happily work every Sunday, because I have classes during the week.

    M艂oda pani jest, tote偶 my艣li pani o zarobkach. Za moich czas贸w niedziela by艂a od roso艂u, a nie od zakup贸w.

    You're young, so you think about earning money. In my day, Sunday was for chicken soup, not for shopping.

    Ros贸艂 mog臋 zje艣膰 po zmianie. Zakaz niby chroni pracownik贸w handlu, lecz mnie nikt nie zapyta艂 o zdanie.

    I can have my soup after my shift. The ban supposedly protects retail workers, but nobody asked me what I thought.

    Pani kochana, ustawy pisze si臋 po to, by chroni膰 tak偶e tych, kt贸rzy boj膮 si臋 poskar偶y膰.

    My dear young lady, laws are written to protect the people who are afraid to complain as well.

    Czyli ustawodawca lepiej ode mnie wie, kiedy mam odpoczywa膰? To wygodne dla uprzywilejowanych, kt贸rzy mog膮 robi膰 zakupy w tygodniu.

    So the lawmakers know better than I do when I should rest? That's convenient for the privileged few who can do their shopping during the week.

    Ja akurat w tygodniu nie mog臋, gdy偶 mam dzia艂k臋, basen i wnuki.

    As it happens, I can't during the week, because I've got my allotment, the swimming pool and my grandchildren.

    To dok膮d pan jedzie, je艣li wolno spyta膰? Bo chyba wysiadamy na tym samym przystanku.

    So where are you off to, if I may ask? Because I think we're getting off at the same stop.

    Do galerii, po nowy telewizor. Zasadniczo jestem przeciw, lecz skoro ju偶 otwarte, grzech nie skorzysta膰.

    To the shopping centre, for a new television. In principle I'm against it, but since they're open anyway, it'd be a sin not to make the most of it.
