Day 125: Cod from the Far North

In a fish bar by the harbour in W艂adys艂awowo, Malwina (A), a customer reading the news on her phone, asks the waiter, Leon (B), about the cod on the menu.

How to study this lesson 3 steps
  1. Read the situation under the title. It says who is talking and how they know each other, which decides how politely they speak.

    Excuse me, is this cod from the Baltic? I'm just reading that Baltic cod are half the size they were thirty years ago.

    Nasz jest z Norwegii, prosz臋 pani. Ba艂tyckiego od kilku lat nie wolno 艂owi膰, rybacy wyci膮gaj膮 go najwy偶ej przypadkowo.

    Ours is from Norway, madam. Fishing for Baltic cod has been banned for several years now; fishermen only ever land one by accident.

    Czyli wbrew pozorom jem nad Ba艂tykiem ryb臋 z dalekiej p贸艂nocy? A wed艂ug artyku艂u sam zakaz niewiele pom贸g艂.

    So despite appearances, I'm sitting by the Baltic eating fish from the far north? And according to the article, the ban on its own hasn't helped much.

    Bo winne s膮 nie tylko po艂owy. Przy dnie panuje niedob贸r tlenu na skutek nawoz贸w sp艂ywaj膮cych z p贸l, a w dorszach roi si臋 od paso偶yt贸w.

    Because it's not just the fishing that's to blame. There's too little oxygen near the seabed because of fertiliser running off the fields, and the cod are riddled with parasites.

    I study oceanography, and in the holidays I help out my uncle. Last year I was counting those parasites on a research vessel, and now I'm getting to know cod from the kitchen side.

    So what would you recommend to someone who wants to eat fish that's really from round here, with a clear conscience?

    Fl膮dr臋. Fl膮dry w Ba艂tyku akurat nie brakuje, a t臋 wujek z艂owi艂 dzi艣 o 艣wicie.

    The flounder. There's no shortage of flounder in the Baltic, and my uncle caught this one at dawn today.
