Day 13: GPS in the Company Car

In the kitchen of a pharmaceutical wholesaler's office in Gdańsk, sales reps Bartek (A) and Kasia (B) discuss a new email from HR about their company cars.

How to study this lesson 3 steps
  1. Read the situation under the title. It says who is talking and how they know each other, which decides how politely they speak.
  2. Read the dialogue line by line with its translation, until every line makes sense. Point at (or tap) a Polish word to see what it means.
  3. Spend at least 30 minutes listening to native Polish, for example from the Resources page. It doesn't matter if you don't understand it yet.

    Czytałaś maila z kadr? Od poniedziałku każde służbowe auto jest monitorowane całą dobę.

    Have you read the email from HR? From Monday every company car is tracked round the clock.

    Czytałam i nie rozumiem, skąd to oburzenie. Pracodawca ma prawo wiedzieć, gdzie jest jego flota.

    I have, and I don't see what all the outrage is about. An employer has every right to know where its fleet is.

    Ale szef będzie też wiedział, dokąd jeżdżę po godzinach. To już ingerencja w prywatność.

    But the boss will also know where I drive after hours. That's an invasion of privacy.

    Przesadzasz. W trybie prywatnym sÄ… rejestrowane tylko kilometry, bez trasy.

    You're exaggerating. In private mode only the mileage is recorded, not the route.

    Tylko skąd mam wiedzieć, jak długo te dane są przechowywane i kto je przetwarza?

    But how am I supposed to know how long that data is kept and who processes it?

    Zapytaj inspektora ochrony danych. Zresztą nadajniki zamontowano już w marcu.

    Ask the data protection officer. Anyway, the trackers were fitted back in March.

    W marcu? To już wiem, skąd szef wiedział, że w majówkę przewoziłem teściowej szafę.

    In March? So that's how the boss knew I moved my mother-in-law's wardrobe over the May Day weekend.
