Day 15: Saving the Village School

In a Radio Olsztyn studio, presenter Marek Nowicki (A) hosts a debate on closing the village school in Zalesie with Barbara Lis (B), head of the rural commune, Tomasz Krajewski (C), a father of pupils there, and Iga Kaczmarek (D), a young teacher.

How to study this lesson 3 steps
  1. Read the situation under the title. It says who is talking and how they know each other, which decides how politely they speak.
  2. Read the dialogue line by line with its translation, until every line makes sense. Point at (or tap) a Polish word to see what it means.
  3. Spend at least 30 minutes listening to native Polish, for example from the Resources page. It doesn't matter if you don't understand it yet.

    Mrs Lis, why does the commune want to close a school that forty children attend?

    Przeanalizowawszy bud偶et, nie widzimy innego wyj艣cia. Subwencja o艣wiatowa nie pokrywa nawet po艂owy koszt贸w.

    Having analysed the budget, we see no other way. The state education subsidy doesn't even cover half the costs.

    Pani liczy z艂ot贸wki, a ja godziny. Troje moich dzieci b臋dzie traci膰 godzin臋 dziennie na dojazd.

    You're counting z艂oty, I'm counting hours. Three of my children will lose an hour a day getting to school.

    Ma艂e klasy to atut, nie problem. Pi臋cioro moich uczni贸w ma najlepsze wyniki w powiecie.

    Small classes are an asset, not a problem. Five of my pupils have the best results in the district.

    Mrs Lis, did anyone consider handing the school over to an association, as neighbouring communes have done?

    Owszem, ale nikt si臋 nie zg艂osi艂. Je艣li pa艅stwo za艂o偶膮 stowarzyszenie, ch臋tnie porozmawiamy.

    We did, but nobody came forward. If you set up an association, we'll be happy to talk.

    Trzymam pani膮 za s艂owo. Na li艣cie za艂o偶ycieli mamy ju偶 dwadzie艣cia rodzin.

    I'll hold you to that. We've already got twenty families on the list of founders.
