Day 151: Seventy Per Cent Humidity

In a rented flat in a 1970s block in Wejherowo, a tenant (A) who researches building physics at a university of technology shows her landlord, W艂odzimierz (B), a bank analyst, the mould in the corner of her bedroom.

How to study this lesson 3 steps
  1. Read the situation under the title. It says who is talking and how they know each other, which decides how politely they speak.

    W艂odzimierz, look at this corner, please. The mould appeared in November, right after the windows were replaced.

    Widz臋, ale zanim zacznie pani wini膰 okna, wypada艂oby sprawdzi膰, czy nie wiesza pani prania w pokoju.

    I can see it, but before you start blaming the windows, it might be worth checking whether you hang your washing up indoors.

    I don't hang washing up indoors, and I've been measuring the humidity for two years, because I test sensors. Before the replacement it was forty-five per cent; now it's seventy.

    Correlation isn't causation, Doctor. Since November it's also got colder, and people open their windows less often in frosty weather.

    That's why I compared the readings with last winter: similar frosts, the windows opened just as often, and humidity below fifty per cent.

    All right, but how can windows raise the humidity? I put in the most airtight ones there were, so that the heat wouldn't escape.

    That's exactly why: natural ventilation only works when the air has a way to get in, and the new windows have no trickle vents.

    So by putting in airtight windows, I cut off the air supply myself? We ought to test that, though, before I start drilling into brand-new frames.
