Day 39: Two Votes Short

In a pub in Wa艂brzych, Przemek (A) tells his friend Gosia (B), who works as a property manager, how the residents' vote on adding a lift to his block of flats went.

How to study this lesson 3 steps
  1. Read the situation under the title. It says who is talking and how they know each other, which decides how politely they speak.
  2. Read the dialogue line by line with its translation, until every line makes sense. Point at (or tap) a Polish word to see what it means.
  3. Spend at least 30 minutes listening to native Polish, for example from the Resources page. It doesn't matter if you don't understand it yet.

    Gosiu, winda przepad艂a. Zabrak艂o nam dok艂adnie dw贸ch g艂os贸w.

    Gosia, the lift's been voted down. We were exactly two votes short.

    Przecie偶 dzi臋ki dotacji z miasta dop艂ata by艂aby symboliczna. Kto by艂 przeciw?

    But thanks to the city's grant, the extra cost would have been next to nothing. Who voted against?

    Nikt. Zawiod艂a frekwencja: pani Zofia i pan Henryk z czwartego pi臋tra nie zeszli na zebranie.

    Nobody. The turnout let us down: Mrs Zofia and Mr Henryk from the fourth floor didn't come down to the meeting.

    Czyli ci, kt贸rym winda by艂a najbardziej potrzebna, nie zag艂osowali za ni膮 z powodu schod贸w?

    So the very people who needed the lift most didn't vote for it because of the stairs?

    Ironia losu. Trzy czwarte bloku to emeryci, a zebranie zwo艂ano w piwnicy.

    The irony of it. Three quarters of the block are pensioners, and they held the meeting in the basement.

    To zbierzcie podpisy od drzwi do drzwi. Uchwa艂臋 mo偶na te偶 przyj膮膰 w drodze indywidualnego zbierania g艂os贸w.

    Then collect signatures door to door. A resolution can also be passed by collecting votes individually.

    Ju偶 zacz膮艂em. Na czwartym pi臋trze dosta艂em dwa podpisy, trzy kawa艂ki szarlotki i p贸艂tora litra kompotu.

    I've already started. On the fourth floor I got two signatures, three slices of apple cake and a litre and a half of compote.
