Day 40: Two Desks Apart

On a video call between Eindhoven and Poznań, Karolina (A), who has worked in the Netherlands for four years, has some news for her boyfriend Wojtek (B).

How to study this lesson 3 steps
  1. Read the situation under the title. It says who is talking and how they know each other, which decides how politely they speak.
  2. Read the dialogue line by line with its translation, until every line makes sense. Point at (or tap) a Polish word to see what it means.
  3. Spend at least 30 minutes listening to native Polish, for example from the Resources page. It doesn't matter if you don't understand it yet.

    Wojtek, my request to work remotely has been approved! I'm coming back for good in March.

    Na stałe? Wspaniale, tylko czemu mnie nie uprzedziłaś, że się o to starasz?

    For good? That's wonderful, but why didn't you let me know you were going for it?

    Nie chciałam zapeszać. Pół roku walczyłam, aby przestać być emigrantką i nie stracić pracy.

    I didn't want to jinx it. I fought for six months to stop being an emigrant without losing my job.

    To mamy kłopot. Wczoraj podpisałem umowę z firmą w Eindhoven, by być bliżej ciebie.

    Then we've got a problem. Yesterday I signed a contract with a company in Eindhoven, so I could be closer to you.

    Z jaką firmą? Tylko nie mów, że z naszą.

    Which company? Don't tell me it's ours.

  6. B

    Z waszą. Zostałem przyjęty do twojego działu i miałem siedzieć dwa biurka od ciebie.

    Yours. I've been taken on in your department, and I was going to sit two desks away from you.

    Czyli ty siedzisz przy moim biurku, a ja pracujÄ™ zdalnie z twojej kawalerki?

    So you'll be sitting at my desk, and I'll be working remotely from your studio flat?
