Day 41: A Paper Lily from Class 2b

In the storeroom of a folk museum in Ostrołęka, curator Mateusz (A) shows his colleague Kinga (B), a museum educator, a paper cut-out he has found in an unlabelled box.

How to study this lesson 3 steps
  1. Read the situation under the title. It says who is talking and how they know each other, which decides how politely they speak.
  2. Read the dialogue line by line with its translation, until every line makes sense. Point at (or tap) a Polish word to see what it means.
  3. Spend at least 30 minutes listening to native Polish, for example from the Resources page. It doesn't matter if you don't understand it yet.

    Zobacz, co znalazłem w nieopisanym pudle. Kurpiowska leluja, precyzyjnie wycięta, chyba jeszcze sprzed wojny.

    Look what I found in an unlabelled box. A Kurpie paper-cut lily, done with real precision, probably from before the war.

    Piękna. Tylko jak ustalimy, skąd się tu wzięła, skoro w dokumentacji nie ma o niej żadnej wzmianki?

    Beautiful. But how are we going to find out how it got here if there's no mention of it anywhere in the records?

  3. A

    Zarówno papier, jak i motyw wskazują na lata trzydzieste. Wobec tego wpisujemy ją do inwentarza.

    Both the paper and the motif point to the thirties. So we're entering it in the inventory.

  4. B

    Czekaj, pokaż tył. Ktoś napisał tu ołówkiem: „Kinga, klasa 2b”.

    Wait, show me the back. Someone's written here in pencil: "Kinga, class 2b".

    Jaka Kinga? Czyżby to było twoje dzieło z podstawówki?

    Which Kinga? Could this be your masterpiece from primary school?

  6. B

    Moje. Instruktorka na warsztatach w tym muzeum pochwaliła moją leluję, po czym ją zabrała, a ja przepłakałam cały wieczór.

    It's mine. The instructor at a workshop here at the museum praised my lily and then took it away, and I cried all evening.

  7. A

    Mimo to trafi na ekspozycję. Podpiszemy: „Leluja kurpiowska, początek XXI wieku, autorka oprowadza wycieczki”.

    Even so, it's going on display. The label will say: "Kurpie lily, early 21st century, the artist gives guided tours".
