Day 77: My Position Was Eliminated
In their kitchen in Piła, the evening before a job interview, sixteen-year-old Miłosz (A) plays the recruiter for his father, Artur (B).
How to study this lesson 3 steps
- Read the situation under the title. It says who is talking and how they know each other, which decides how politely they speak.
- Read the dialogue line by line with its translation, until every line makes sense. Point at (or tap) a Polish word to see what it means.
- Spend at least 30 minutes listening to native Polish, for example from the Resources page. It doesn't matter if you don't understand it yet.
Dialogue
Audio recordings are on the way. For now, each lesson is the dialogue with its English translation.

A
Dobra, jestem rekruterem. Dlaczego po dwudziestu latach odszedłeś z poprzedniej firmy?
Right, I'm the recruiter. Why did you leave your previous company after twenty years?
-
B
W związku z reorganizacją firmy moje stanowisko uległo likwidacji, co otworzyło przede mną nowe możliwości.
Owing to the company's reorganisation, my position was eliminated, which opened up new opportunities for me.
-
A
Czyli cię zwolnili. Tato, nie kombinuj, brzmisz jak pismo z urzędu.
So they sacked you. Dad, stop dressing it up, you sound like a letter from the council.
-
B
Na rozmowach mówi się właśnie tak. Nikt nie mówi rekruterowi wprost, że go zwolniono.
That's exactly how you talk in interviews. Nobody tells a recruiter straight out that they were let go.
-
A
A taka jedna rekruterka w internecie mówi, że przy banalnych formułkach od razu się wyłącza.
Well, there's this recruiter online who says she switches off the moment she hears trite stock phrases.
-
B
To co mam powiedzieć? Że po dwudziestu latach wyrzucili mnie razem z całym działem?
So what am I supposed to say? That after twenty years they threw me out along with my whole department?
-
A
Powiedz, że zanim zacząłeś szukać czegoś dla siebie, pomogłeś znaleźć pracę całemu zespołowi. To twój atut.
Tell them that before you started looking for something for yourself, you helped your whole team find jobs. That's your strong point.
