Day 93: No More Whispering About Pay
At an employers' forum in Zabrze, moderator Ireneusz K艂os (A) opens a panel on pay transparency with Aldona Majewska (B), HR director of a car parts factory, Bogdan Jarosz (C), who owns a family joinery, and Roksana Pawlik (D), a young recruiter.
How to study this lesson 3 steps
- Read the situation under the title. It says who is talking and how they know each other, which decides how politely they speak.
- Read the dialogue line by line with its translation, until every line makes sense. Point at (or tap) a Polish word to see what it means.
- Spend at least 30 minutes listening to native Polish, for example from the Resources page. It doesn't matter if you don't understand it yet.

Ladies and gentlemen, employers now have to tell candidates what the pay is before the interview. Ms Majewska, is it a revolution or just another obligation?

Not for us. We've been publishing pay ranges for two years, as without them we weren't getting good candidates.

That's easy in a corporation. In my joinery the rule has always been that you don't talk about money.

Which is why young people weren't sending you their CVs. My generation scrolls straight past ads with no pay range, without even opening them.

The old guard spoke up instead. In March I put a pay range in an ad, and the next day three experienced joiners came asking for a rise.

And did they get one? If a new hire was going to earn more, you can hardly blame them.

They did. I evened out their pay not to make the ad look good, but so that my best people wouldn't leave.

So transparency didn't spoil the atmosphere, it just showed up the inequalities. People always talked about money, only in whispers in the smoking room.
