   Dostałem od pani pismo: „Uprzejmie informuję, iż w dniu dwunastego czerwca gospodarstwo odwiedzi korpus dyplomatyczny”. Dopiero za trzecim razem zrozumiałem, że chodzi o ambasadorów.

   I got your letter: 'I wish to inform you that on the twelfth of June the farm will be visited by the diplomatic corps.' It took me three reads to work out that it meant ambassadors.

   Dwudziestu dwóch ambasadorów z małżonkami i pięciorgiem dzieci. Powitanie zrobimy tutaj, a na tamtym słupie zawiesimy biało-czerwoną.

   Twenty-two ambassadors with their spouses and five children. We'll hold the welcome here, and we'll hang the Polish flag on that pole over there.

   Na tamtym słupie mieszkają bociany z czworgiem młodych. Bocian jest pod ścisłą ochroną, więc gniazdo jest nietykalne jak ambasada.

   There are storks living on that pole, with four chicks. Storks are strictly protected, so the nest is as inviolable as an embassy.

   To może przeniesiemy je na tydzień? Ministerstwo wystąpi w tej sprawie z oficjalnym pismem, choćby do samego wojewody.

   Then couldn't we move it for a week? The ministry will send an official letter about it, to the provincial governor himself if need be.

   Gniazdo można przenieść tylko za zgodą regionalnej dyrekcji ochrony środowiska, poza sezonem lęgowym. Może pani uznać bociana za persona non grata, ale i tak wyjedzie dopiero w sierpniu.

   A nest can only be moved with the regional environmental directorate's permission, outside the breeding season. You can declare the stork persona non grata, but he still won't leave until August.

   Dobrze, flagi staną przy płocie. Tylko czy goście będą bezpieczni pod gniazdem? Nie chcę, żeby ambasador wracał do Warszawy z pamiątką na marynarce.

   Fine, the flags will go by the fence. But will the guests be safe under the nest? I don't want an ambassador going back to Warsaw with a souvenir on his jacket.

   I've got umbrellas for just that eventuality. Besides, the ambassadors are coming precisely for the storks: have a look at your own programme, item three.

   „Punkt trzeci: obserwacja gniazd bocianich”. No tak, bociany są głównym punktem programu, a ja chciałam im zawiesić flagę na dachu.

   'Item three: observing stork nests.' Right, so the storks are the main event, and I wanted to hang a flag on their roof.

   W protokole liczy się starszeństwo, prawda? To gniazdo stoi tu od trzydziestu lat, dłużej, niż ja prowadzę gospodarstwo.

   In protocol, it's seniority that counts, isn't it? That nest has been here for thirty years, longer than I've been running the farm.

    W takim razie zmieniam scenariusz: przemówienie powitalne wygłosi bocian, a pan będzie tłumaczem. Tylko proszę trzymać się tekstu.

    Klekot łatwo się tłumaczy, i to od razu na język urzędniczy: „Uprzejmie informuję, iż powyższe gniazdo stanowi terytorium bociana”.

    Clattering is easy to translate, and straight into officialese: 'I wish to inform you that the above nest constitutes the stork's territory.'

    Zapiszę to w programie, a kierowcom ambasad każę parkować limuzyny daleko od słupa. Oboje wiemy dlaczego.

    I'll put that in the programme, and I'll tell the embassy drivers to park the limousines well away from the pole. We both know why.
