   Babcia przysłała skorupy tamtej karafki i liścik: „Wy się na tym znacie”. Na dziewięćdziesiątkę chce ją z powrotem, a córki przy jednym stole.

   Grandma's sent us the pieces of that decanter with a note: 'You two know about these things.' For her ninetieth she wants it back, and both her daughters at one table.

   Karafkę odtworzymy: ty wydmuchasz, ja oszlifuję. Gorzej z twoją matką, która od dwudziestu lat powtarza wszystkim, że to ja ją stłukłem.

   We can recreate the decanter: you blow it, I'll cut it. Your mother's the bigger problem: for twenty years she's been telling everyone it was me who broke it.

   Because to her it is a relic: Grandad blew it right here, in this glassworks, for his own wedding. Look, the piece with the star is missing.

   It isn't missing. I've carried it in my wallet since the day I checked whether Grandad's crystal really rings. It did. Once.

   Byłbym się przyznał, gdyby mama nie przysięgła przy wszystkich, że jej syn nie kłamie. Miałem osiem lat, nie chciałem robić z niej kłamczuchy.

   I would have owned up if Mum hadn't sworn in front of everyone that her son doesn't lie. I was eight; I didn't want to make a liar of her.

   So my mum has been right for twenty years, just without any proof. Yours will have to apologise to her, and neither of them will survive that.
