Day 51: Eight Months of Participant Observation

Over breakfast in their flat in Częstochowa, Sylwia (A), the managing editor of a psychology journal, reminds her husband Jacek (B), a university psychologist, about the review he promised her journal in January.

How to study this lesson 3 steps
  1. Read the situation under the title. It says who is talking and how they know each other, which decides how politely they speak.
  2. Read the dialogue line by line with its translation, until every line makes sense. Point at (or tap) a Polish word to see what it means.
  3. Spend at least 30 minutes listening to native Polish, for example from the Resources page. It doesn't matter if you don't understand it yet.

    Przeczytam ci maila od redakcji, czyli ode mnie: „Uprzejmie przypominam, iż termin nadesłania recenzji upłynął w lutym”.

    Let me read you an email from the editorial office, in other words from me: 'This is a polite reminder that the deadline for submitting your review passed in February.'

    Luzik, ogarnę to w weekend. Praca o prokrastynacji nie zając, nie ucieknie.

    Chill, I'll sort it out at the weekend. A paper on procrastination will keep.

    „Luzik”? Mówisz jak Leon nad lekcjami. Autor czeka już osiem miesięcy, a ty w tym czasie wrzuciłeś trzy posty o opieszałych recenzentach.

    'Chill'? You sound like Leon over his homework. The author's been waiting eight months, and meanwhile you've put up three posts about tardy reviewers.

    To nie zwłoka, tylko obserwacja uczestnicząca. Żeby rzetelnie ocenić artykuł o prokrastynacji, muszę ją najpierw poznać od środka.

    It's not delay, it's participant observation. To assess a paper on procrastination properly, I first have to get to know it from the inside.

    Osiem miesięcy obserwacji to aż nadto. Zresztą wydawnictwo chce was zastąpić botem, który ocenia artykuł w cztery sekundy.

    Eight months of observation is more than enough. Besides, the publisher wants to replace you lot with a bot that assesses a paper in four seconds.

    Masakra. Taki bot zmyśla bibliografię i powołuje się na prace, których nikt nigdy nie napisał.

    Nightmare. A bot like that makes up its references and cites papers nobody ever wrote.

    Zmyśla, ale w terminie. A ty przez osiem miesięcy nie wymyśliłeś nawet porządnej wymówki.

    It makes things up, but on time. And in eight months you haven't even come up with a decent excuse.

    Dobra, już otwieram laptopa. Dopóki Leon jest na treningu, mam spokój, więc napiszę recenzję, że mucha nie siada.

    OK, OK, I'm opening my laptop. While Leon's at training I've got some peace, so I'll write a review nobody could fault.

    Czekaj, co ty tam wpisujesz do czatu? Przed chwilą sam mówiłeś, że boty tylko zmyślają.

    Hang on, what are you typing into that chatbot? A minute ago you said yourself that bots just make things up.

    Wyluzuj, to nie to, co myślisz. Odpisuję na twojego maila: czat ma uprzejmie wyjaśnić, czemu nieco się spóźnię.

    Relax, it's not what you think. I'm replying to your email: the chatbot's going to explain politely why I'll be slightly late.
