   I'd have known you without the photo, Jeremiasz: you've got my grandad Franciszek's nose, just without the moustache.

   According to the DNA test we're second cousins, though at home the family from round Radzyń was spoken of badly or not at all.

   In our family the story went that your grandad took the horse and the eiderdowns in the night and left for the Recovered Territories before anyone woke up.

   Wyjechał, bo dostał tylko konia, a pański dziadek, zostawszy na gospodarce, zagarnął ziemię i dom, jak gdyby był jedynakiem.

   He left because all he got was the horse, while your grandad, who stayed on the farm, grabbed the land and the house as if he were an only child.

   Grabbed? My grandad slaved away till the day he died, while yours sent the odd Christmas card at most, and not every year.

   Grandad Walery! That same accordion sits on top of our wardrobe; Grandma never let anyone touch it. So he did come after all?

   I nie tylko wtedy. Przejrzawszy rano albumy, znalazłem go na chrzcinach, dożynkach i pogrzebie pradziadka. Zawsze bez żony.

   And not just that once. Going through the albums this morning, I found him at christenings, at the harvest festival and at our great-grandfather's funeral. Always without his wife.
