   Listen to how it starts: 'For forty years Mrs Ludmiła ran the school library and raised three generations of readers.' Well?

   Like an obituary in the paper. We've got three minutes at the graveside, and you've got a page and a half and not a word about the kettle.

   O czajniku? No tak: zimą herbata z sokiem malinowym, a okruszków na atlasach jakoś nie zauważała.

   The kettle? Oh, right: tea with raspberry syrup in winter, and somehow she never noticed the crumbs on the atlases.

   I że na dużej przerwie wpuszczała każdego, kto stał sam na korytarzu. Trzy czwarte podstawówki przesiedziałam między jej regałami.

   And that at the long break she let in anyone standing on their own in the corridor. I spent three quarters of primary school between her shelves.

   Ja też. Dlatego dopisałem zakończenie: „Gdybym był wiedział, że widzimy się ostatni raz, byłbym oddał jej książkę, którą mam od trzeciej klasy”.

   Me too. That's why I've added an ending: 'Had I known we were seeing each other for the last time, I would have given her back the book I've had since Year Three.'

   'Pan Samochodzik and the Templars', the adventure novel. Every year I meant to take it back, and every year I felt more embarrassed.

   That's the last day of Year Three. That's when she gave it to me for the holidays and said, 'Bring it back in September.'

    Czyli dziewiętnaście lat gryzło mnie sumienie, że nie oddałem prezentu. Zmieniam zakończenie: zamiast „przepraszam” będzie „dziękuję” i nawet zmieszczę się w trzech minutach.

    So for nineteen years my conscience has been nagging me about not giving back a present. I'm changing the ending: instead of 'sorry' it'll be 'thank you', and I'll even keep it within three minutes.
