Day 176: Five Programmers Wanted

Over a beer in Pruszków, a young programmer (A) shows his close friend (B) a job advertisement from his own company.

How to study this lesson 3 steps
  1. Read the situation under the title. It says who is talking and how they know each other, which decides how politely they speak.
  2. Read the dialogue line by line with its translation, until every line makes sense. Point at (or tap) a Polish word to see what it means.
  3. Spend at least 30 minutes listening to native Polish, for example from the Resources page. It doesn't matter if you don't understand it yet.

    Look: my company's looking for five programmers, and the pay range starts higher than what I earn.

  2. B

    No to masz czarno na białym, jak cię tam doceniają. Byłeś z tym u szefowej?

    Well, there it is in black and white: how much they value you. Have you taken it to your boss?

  3. A

    Byłem. Twierdzi, że nie wie, skąd kadry wzięły te kwoty, a na podwyżki ponoć nie ma budżetu.

    I have. She claims she doesn't know where HR got those figures from, and apparently there's no budget for pay rises.

  4. B

    Na podwyżki nie ma, a na pięciu nowych ludzi jest? Wyślij im swoje CV.

    No money for pay rises, but there's money for five new people? Send them your CV.

    Już wysłałem. W czwartek mam rozmowę i chyba nikt nie sprawdził, gdzie pracuję.

    I already have. I've got an interview on Thursday, and I don't think anyone checked where I work.

    Nieźle. A kto ma z tobą rozmawiać, ktoś z twojego działu?

    Nice one. And who's going to interview you, someone from your own department?

  7. A

    Szefowa, naturalnie. Ciekawe, czy zapyta, dlaczego chcę odejść z obecnej firmy.

    My boss, naturally. I wonder if she'll ask me why I want to leave my current company.
