Day 58: No Secrets in the Village

In a village near Sokółka in Podlasie, where Iga (A) from Warsaw is spending the summer holidays, she walks home from the shop with her grandad Stanisław (B).

How to study this lesson 3 steps
  1. Read the situation under the title. It says who is talking and how they know each other, which decides how politely they speak.
  2. Read the dialogue line by line with its translation, until every line makes sense. Point at (or tap) a Polish word to see what it means.
  3. Spend at least 30 minutes listening to native Polish, for example from the Resources page. It doesn't matter if you don't understand it yet.

    Dziadku, czemu wszyscy mi tu mówią „dzień dobry”? Przecież mnie nie znają.

    Grandad, why does everyone here say hello to me? They don't even know me.

    Znają cię lepiej, niż myślisz. Na wsi „dzień dobry” mówi się każdemu.

    They know you better than you think. In the country you say hello to everyone.

    A w Warszawie nawet sąsiadów się nie zna.

    But in Warsaw you don't even know your neighbours.

    Tu nie ma obcych. Ledwo przyjechałaś, a każdy wie, czyja jesteś wnuczka.

    There are no strangers here. You've barely arrived, and everyone knows whose granddaughter you are.

    To dlatego pani w sklepie pytała, jak mi idzie jeżdżenie na rowerze?

    So that's why the lady in the shop asked how my cycling was going?

    Widziała twoje lądowanie w pokrzywach. Wiem to od niej, nie od ciebie.

    She saw your landing in the nettles. I heard it from her, not from you.
