Day 130: The Landlord's December Discount
In the flat they rent in Lubin, one evening in December, Michalina (A) reads out to her flatmate Bianka (B) a text message their landlord sent that morning, while the landlord himself, Mr Bernard (C), is changing a light bulb in the hall.
How to study this lesson 3 steps
- Read the situation under the title. It says who is talking and how they know each other, which decides how politely they speak.
- Read the dialogue line by line with its translation, until every line makes sense. Point at (or tap) a Polish word to see what it means.
- Spend at least 30 minutes listening to native Polish, for example from the Resources page. It doesn't matter if you don't understand it yet.
Dialogue
Audio recordings are on the way. For now, each lesson is the dialogue with its English translation.

A
Słuchaj, pan Bernard pisze, że jeśli czynsz za pierwszy kwartał zapłacimy jeszcze w grudniu, dostaniemy pięć procent rabatu.
Listen, Mr Bernard says that if we pay the rent for the first quarter while it's still December, we'll get five per cent off.
-
B
Bierzmy, zanim się rozmyśli! Pięć procent to więcej, niż przez pół roku daje moja lokata, na której trzymam wszystkie oszczędności.
Let's take it before he changes his mind! Five per cent is more than my deposit account pays in six months, and that's where I keep all my savings.
-
C
Słyszę, że panie już liczą. Proszę mi wierzyć, lepszej oferty nie dostaną panie w żadnym banku.
I can hear you ladies are already doing the maths. Believe me, you won't get a better offer at any bank.
-
A
No właśnie. Licząc w skali roku, dochodzę do jakichś trzydziestu procent, a takiej stopy zwrotu nikt nie daje z dobroci serca.
Exactly. Working it out as an annual rate, I get about thirty per cent, and nobody gives a return like that out of the kindness of their heart.
-
C
Nie ukrywam, że ja też na tym zyskam: do końca roku chcę wpłacić cały limit na IKZE, a wpłatę odliczę sobie od dochodu.
I won't deny that I'll gain from it too: I want to pay the full limit into my private pension account before the end of the year, and I'll deduct the payment from my taxable income.
-
B
No i wszystko jasne: pan ma ulgÄ™ podatkowÄ…, a my rabat. To gdzie tu haczyk?
Well, that clears it up: you get a tax break and we get a discount. So where's the catch?
-
A
Haczyk jest taki, że lokatę gwarantuje Bankowy Fundusz Gwarancyjny, a przedpłatę, o której mówimy, tylko pańskie słowo. Poproszę o aneks do umowy.
The catch is that a bank deposit is guaranteed by the Bank Guarantee Fund, and the prepayment we're talking about only by your word. I'd like an addendum to the tenancy agreement, please.
-
C
Aneks przygotuję jeszcze dziś. Pani Michalino, z takim podejściem powinna pani sama założyć IKZE.
I'll draw up the addendum today. Michalina, with that kind of approach, you ought to open a private pension account yourself.
-
B
Z czego, panie Bernardzie? Wszystkie nasze oszczędności idą właśnie na pański czynsz.
With what, Mr Bernard? All our savings are going on your rent as we speak.
