Day 135: Straight from the Press Kit
At their parents' flat in Żywiec, film studies student Sonia (A) takes her older brother Denis (B), who reviews films in one-minute videos online, to task over his rave review of a new Polish horror film, Topielica.
How to study this lesson 3 steps
- Read the situation under the title. It says who is talking and how they know each other, which decides how politely they speak.
- Read the dialogue line by line with its translation, until every line makes sense. Point at (or tap) a Polish word to see what it means.
- Spend at least 30 minutes listening to native Polish, for example from the Resources page. It doesn't matter if you don't understand it yet.
Dialogue
Audio recordings are on the way. For now, each lesson is the dialogue with its English translation.

A
Widziałam twoją rolkę o „Topielicy”. „Najstraszniejszy polski horror dekady”, serio?
I've seen your reel about Topielica. 'The scariest Polish horror film of the decade', seriously?
-
B
W minutowym filmiku nie zmieścisz niuansów. Rolka ma już kilkaset tysięcy wyświetleń, czyli ludzie chcą takich recenzji.
You can't fit nuance into a one-minute video. The reel's already had several hundred thousand views, so that's the kind of review people want.
-
A
Wyświetlenia to nie argument. Recenzja ma uzasadniać ocenę, a twoje banalne hasła pasowałyby do czegokolwiek, choćby do reklamy jogurtu.
Views aren't an argument. A review is supposed to justify its verdict, and your trite slogans would fit anything, even a yoghurt advert.
-
B
Przesadzasz. Dystrybutor przysłał link do filmu kilkunastu twórcom internetowym, a ja po prostu powiedziałem szczerze, co myślę.
You're exaggerating. The distributor sent a link to the film to a dozen or so content creators, and I simply said honestly what I think.
-
A
Razem z gadżetami i biletami do rozdania widzom? Jeśli dostajesz cokolwiek w zamian, musisz to oznaczyć jako reklamę.
Along with free merch and tickets to give away to your viewers? If you get anything in return, you have to label it as an advert.
-
B
Wszyscy tak robią. Gdybym oznaczał każdą koszulkę od dystrybutora, połowa mojego profilu byłaby jedną wielką reklamą.
Everyone does it. If I labelled every T-shirt from a distributor, half my profile would be one big advert.
-
A
Bo jest, a przez to tracisz wiarygodność. Porównałam: połowa twojej recenzji to słowo w słowo notka prasowa dystrybutora.
Because it is, and that's costing you your credibility. I compared them: half your review is the distributor's press release, word for word.
-
B
Dobra, oznaczę ją i nagram nową, uczciwą. Tylko nie mów nikomu, że link wygasł, zanim obejrzałem połowę.
Fine, I'll label it and record a new, honest one. Just don't tell anyone the link expired before I'd watched half of it.
-
A
Za późno na nową. Dystrybutor dał już twój cytat na plakat, więc ich własna notka wisi teraz na mieście podpisana twoim nickiem.
Too late for a new one. The distributor has already put your quote on the poster, so their own press release is now up all over town, signed with your handle.
