Day 17: The Bubble Tea Index

In the kitchen of their flat in Szczecin, sixteen-year-old Wiktoria (A) asks her mother, Joanna (B), for a moment of her time.

How to study this lesson 3 steps
  1. Read the situation under the title. It says who is talking and how they know each other, which decides how politely they speak.
  2. Read the dialogue line by line with its translation, until every line makes sense. Point at (or tap) a Polish word to see what it means.
  3. Spend at least 30 minutes listening to native Polish, for example from the Resources page. It doesn't matter if you don't understand it yet.

    Mamo, masz chwilę? Przygotowałam prezentację, bo chcę renegocjować kieszonkowe.

    Mum, have you got a minute? I've prepared a presentation, because I want to renegotiate my pocket money.

    Wydrukowana, zszyta, z zestawieniem cen... Widzę, że sprawa jest poważna.

    Printed, stapled, with a table of prices... I can see this is serious.

    No bo inflacja zjada mi kieszonkowe! Bubble tea kosztowała dwadzieścia złotych, a teraz dwadzieścia pięć.

    Well, inflation is eating my pocket money! Bubble tea used to cost twenty złoty, and now it's twenty-five.

    Twój indeks bubble tea to jednak dość subiektywny wskaźnik inflacji, kochanie.

    Your bubble tea index is a rather subjective measure of inflation, though, sweetheart.

    Ale ja nie żyję w statystykach, tylko w liceum. Tam wszystko drożeje szybciej.

    But I don't live in statistics, I live in secondary school. Everything goes up faster there.

    Dobrze, podwyżka przyznana. Ale od dziś doładowania telefonu opłacasz sama.

    All right, raise granted. But from today you pay for your phone top-ups yourself.

    Spodziewałam się tego. Slajd siódmy: przechodzę na tańszą ofertę i nadal wychodzę na plus.

    I saw that coming. Slide seven: I switch to a cheaper plan and still come out ahead.
