Day 18: Home from Reykjavík

In her kitchen in Nowy Sącz, retired teacher Stanisława (B) listens as her granddaughter Ola (A), visiting from Reykjavík with her family, brings up a big decision.

How to study this lesson 3 steps
  1. Read the situation under the title. It says who is talking and how they know each other, which decides how politely they speak.
  2. Read the dialogue line by line with its translation, until every line makes sense. Point at (or tap) a Polish word to see what it means.
  3. Spend at least 30 minutes listening to native Polish, for example from the Resources page. It doesn't matter if you don't understand it yet.

    Babciu, zastanawiamy się z Michałem nad powrotem do kraju. Tylko boję się o adaptację dzieci.

    Grandma, Michał and I are thinking about moving back to Poland. I'm just worried about how the kids will adapt.

    Adaptacja! Ja wychowałam czworo w dwóch pokojach, a ty się boisz o dwoje.

    Adapt! I brought up four in two rooms, and you're worried about two.

    Ale oboje myślą już po islandzku, a Kuba pisze bez polskich znaków.

    But they both think in Icelandic now, and Kuba writes without Polish characters.

    Nauczą się, dzieci chłoną wszystko jak gąbka. A ty znajdziesz tu pracę?

    They'll learn, children soak everything up like sponges. And will you find a job here?

  5. A

    Pielęgniarek brakuje wszędzie, a pensje są już przyzwoite. Martwi mnie tylko zmiana szkoły w środku roku.

    There's a shortage of nurses everywhere, and the pay is decent now. The only thing that worries me is changing schools mid-year.

    Już w piątek oboje zostali zapisani do szkoły za rogiem. Dyrektorka to moja dawna wychowanka.

    They were both enrolled at the school round the corner back on Friday. The head teacher is a former pupil of mine.

    Babciu! Przecież jeszcze nic nie postanowiliśmy!

    Grandma! We haven't even decided anything yet!
