Day 45: Dull as Ditchwater
At the kitchen table in Zamość, Dorota (A), who reviews books for a local weekly, reads the review of Anne of Green Gables that her son Julek (B) has written for school.
How to study this lesson 3 steps
- Read the situation under the title. It says who is talking and how they know each other, which decides how politely they speak.
- Read the dialogue line by line with its translation, until every line makes sense. Point at (or tap) a Polish word to see what it means.
- Spend at least 30 minutes listening to native Polish, for example from the Resources page. It doesn't matter if you don't understand it yet.

Recenzja jest oceniana za rzeczowe argumenty, a nie za emocje. I o cudzej pracy pisze się z szacunkiem.
A review is marked on solid arguments, not feelings. And you write about other people's work with respect.

But you wrote in the paper that the book by that man off the telly was a waste of paper!

Bo uzasadniłam to na dwóch stronach: papierowe postacie i dialogi jak z instrukcji obsługi.
Because I backed it up over two pages: cardboard characters and dialogue like an instruction manual.

Dobra, to napiszę: „Książka jest polecana przez dorosłych, bo dorośli lubią, jak ktoś dużo gada”.
Fine, then I'll write: "The book is recommended by grown-ups, because grown-ups like it when someone talks a lot."

No proszę, jest i teza, i argument. Tylko zamiast „gada” napisz, że bohaterka jest egzaltowana.
Well, look at that: a thesis and an argument. Only instead of "talks", write that the heroine is effusive.

Egzaltowana? Mamo, pani od polskiego od razu zgadnie, kto mi to podyktował.
Effusive? Mum, my Polish teacher will guess straight away who dictated that to me.
