Day 46: It'll Go Away by Itself
At the morning briefing on the cardiology ward of a hospital in Siedlce, the head of the ward, Dr Wiesław Sadowski (A), asks two junior doctors, Małgorzata Pietrzak (B) and Marcin Kalinowski (C), about a patient who is back on the ward.
How to study this lesson 3 steps
- Read the situation under the title. It says who is talking and how they know each other, which decides how politely they speak.
- Read the dialogue line by line with its translation, until every line makes sense. Point at (or tap) a Polish word to see what it means.
- Spend at least 30 minutes listening to native Polish, for example from the Resources page. It doesn't matter if you don't understand it yet.

Right, everyone, Mr Florczak is back with a blood pressure of two hundred over a hundred and ten. Who discharged him?

Ja, panie ordynatorze. Dostał wydrukowane zalecenia i receptę, a diagnozę omówiłam z nim dokładnie.
I did, sir. He was given printed instructions and a prescription, and I went through the diagnosis with him thoroughly.

Bardzo dokładnie, potwierdzam. Słyszałem przez ścianę półgodzinny wywód pełen fachowych terminów.
Very thoroughly, I can confirm. Through the wall I heard a half-hour lecture full of technical terms.

A pan Florczak zapamiętał tylko „nadciśnienie samoistne”. Uznał, że skoro samo przyszło, to samo przejdzie, i odstawił przepisane leki.
And all Mr Florczak remembered was "spontaneous hypertension". He decided that since it came on by itself, it would go away by itself, and stopped taking the pills he'd been prescribed.

Certainly: "You'll be taking these pills for the rest of your life, and thanks to them, that life will be longer."
