Day 5: Too Busy for Sick Leave

At a health centre in Katowice, Julia (A), a young accountant with a high temperature, asks her GP, Dr Adam Zieliński (B), for something for her throat.

How to study this lesson 3 steps
  1. Read the situation under the title. It says who is talking and how they know each other, which decides how politely they speak.
  2. Read the dialogue line by line with its translation, until every line makes sense. Point at (or tap) a Polish word to see what it means.
  3. Spend at least 30 minutes listening to native Polish, for example from the Resources page. It doesn't matter if you don't understand it yet.

Dialogue

Audio recordings are on the way. For now, each lesson is the dialogue with its English translation.

  1. A

Panie doktorze, poproszę tylko coś mocnego na gardło. Zwolnienia nie potrzebuję.

Doctor, I'd just like something strong for my throat, please. I don't need a sick note.

  2. B

Z taką gorączką? Zważywszy na objawy, firma będzie musiała się obyć bez pani przez tydzień.

With a temperature like that? Given your symptoms, your company will have to manage without you for a week.

  3. A

U nas zwolnienia są źle widziane. Kto bierze L4, ten podobno zawodzi zespół.

Sick leave is frowned upon where I work. Supposedly anyone who takes it is letting the team down.

  4. B

Znam to. Tacy ludzie nierzadko lądują u mnie z wypaleniem, zanim się obejrzą.

I know how it goes. People like that often end up in my surgery with burnout before they know it.

  5. A

I co mam powiedzieć szefowi? Że lekarz mi zabronił?

And what am I supposed to tell my boss? That the doctor wouldn't let me?

  6. B

Dokładnie tak. A jeśli szef ma z tym problem, świadczy to o nim, nie o pani.

Exactly that. And if your boss has a problem with it, that says something about him, not about you.

  7. A

Łatwo panu mówić. Dobrze, ale niech to będą trzy dni, a nie tydzień.

That's easy for you to say. All right, but make it three days, not a week.
