Day 6: Grandma's Brick in the Castle

On Castle Square in Warsaw, Tomasz (A) tells his daughter Zuzia (B) about the Royal Castle in front of them.

How to study this lesson 3 steps
  1. Read the situation under the title. It says who is talking and how they know each other, which decides how politely they speak.
  2. Read the dialogue line by line with its translation, until every line makes sense. Point at (or tap) a Polish word to see what it means.
  3. Spend at least 30 minutes listening to native Polish, for example from the Resources page. It doesn't matter if you don't understand it yet.

    Zuziu, patrząc na ten zamek, trudno uwierzyć, że w czterdziestym czwartym został wysadzony.

    Looking at this castle, Zuzia, it's hard to believe it was blown up in '44.

    Jak to wysadzony? Przecież wygląda na starszy niż wszystko dookoła!

    What do you mean, blown up? It looks older than everything around it!

    Bo po wojnie został odbudowany cegła po cegle według starych planów i obrazów.

    Because after the war it was rebuilt brick by brick from old plans and paintings.

    Czyli to podróbka? Jak moje adidasy z bazaru?

    So it's a fake? Like my trainers from the market?

    Nie do końca. Sporo zdobień jest oryginalnych, bo w czasie wojny ludzie je ocalili, ryzykując życie.

    Not quite. A lot of the decoration is original, because during the war people saved it, risking their lives.

    To dlatego babcia mówi, że ma w tym zamku swoją cegiełkę?

    Is that why Grandma says she's got her own brick in this castle?

    Poniekąd. Będąc studentką, oddała na odbudowę całe stypendium i przez miesiąc jadła chleb ze smalcem.

    In a way. As a student, she gave her whole grant to the rebuilding and lived on bread and dripping for a month.
