Day 74: The Pitch Behind the Shop
In his corner shop on a housing estate in Stalowa Wola, Mr Waldek (A) reads the poster that ten-year-old Kajtek (B) wants to put up in the shop window: the civic budget project Kajtek and his mum have submitted for the gravel lot behind the shop.
How to study this lesson 3 steps
- Read the situation under the title. It says who is talking and how they know each other, which decides how politely they speak.
- Read the dialogue line by line with its translation, until every line makes sense. Point at (or tap) a Polish word to see what it means.
- Spend at least 30 minutes listening to native Polish, for example from the Resources page. It doesn't matter if you don't understand it yet.
Dialogue
Audio recordings are on the way. For now, each lesson is the dialogue with its English translation.

A
Boisko w ramach budżetu obywatelskiego? Na placu za moim sklepem?
A sports pitch, as part of the civic budget? On the lot behind my shop?
-
B
Tak! Mama sprawdziła w internecie, że ten plac należy do miasta, a nie do pana.
Yes! Mum checked online: the lot belongs to the city, not to you.
-
A
Zapytaj kogokolwiek z moich klientów: każdy tam parkuje. Gdzie staną po wybudowaniu boiska?
Ask any of my customers: they all park there. Where will they leave their cars once the pitch is built?
-
B
Samochodem przyjeżdża do pana tylko pan Zenek po gazetę. A my przychodzimy na piechotę, całe podwórko!
The only one who comes to you by car is Mr Zenek, for his newspaper. And we all come on foot, every kid on the estate!
-
A
Po jednej gumie do żucia na głowę. Z takiego utargu nie opłacę nawet prądu.
At one packet of gum a head. Takings like that won't even cover my electricity.
-
B
Ale po meczu wszyscy będą chcieli pić. Wykupimy u pana całą wodę i wszystkie lody!
But after a match everyone will be thirsty. We'll buy up all your water and all your ice cream!
-
A
Twardo negocjujesz, wspólniku. Wieszaj plakat, gdziekolwiek chcesz, tylko ani słowa panu Zenkowi.
You drive a hard bargain, partner. Put the poster up wherever you like, just not a word to Mr Zenek.
